(SportsNetwork.com) - Major League Baseball umpire Dale Scott has come out publicly as gay, the first male official in the four major sports to do so. Scott, an MLB umpire since 1986 who has worked three World Series, told Outsports in a story published Tuesday that his homosexuality was no secret in the baseball community. The first public acknowledgement of his sexuality came in October, when Scott submitted a photo of himself and his longtime partner, Michael Rausch, to accompany a profile of the umpire in Referee magazine. The subscription-only publication has since posted the article online. In the caption, Rausch is identified as Scotts longtime companion. Scott, 55, told Outsports they were married last November. Obviously, when I sent that picture to (the magazine), I knew exactly what it meant, Scott said. In a small way, this was opening that door in a publication that wasnt going to be circulated nationwide. It could be picked up, but its not Time magazine. I made that decision to go ahead and do it because I felt it was the right thing to do. I realized that it could open a Pandoras Box, but this is not a surprise to Major League Baseball, the people I work for. Its not a surprise to the umpire staff. Until Mike and I got married last November, he was my same-sex domestic partner and had his own MLB ID and was on my insurance policy. This is not going to be some huge flashing news (at MLB headquarters), but I also didnt want to be making some coming out story, some banner headline, because thats not how I operate. Its not a shock to MLB management because theyre well aware of my situation and its not a shock to the umpire staff. If it would have been, I dont think I would have done it. In addition to three World Series, Scott has also worked three All-Star Games and many playoff series and has been a crew chief for 12 years. She hopes to use the growing popularity of tennis to get more people playing at the local courts and to develop more Milos Raonics and Eugenie Bouchards. "We have experienced unbelievable success in the last number of months and years," she said. "If we can continue to build on that success, I think we can inculcate a culture of tennis in this country. "Its really getting the children and youth of this country playing on courts in their neighbourhoods, just picking up rackets and playing. Its really changing the culture of Canada." Beyond that, the (Tennis Canada) team will help me understand where we need to focus." Before he left, Downey had hoped to start a national membership program for tennis players, and to land a tournament for Vancouver to go with the Rogers Cups in Montreal and Toronto. "We were looking for a person that would bring leadership and who would develop quickly a passion for tennis, whether he or she was a tennis player or not," said LeBoutillier. "And someone who wasnt coming for a year or two and then moving on to something else. "The hiring process went very smoothly and the committee made a unanimous recommendation to the board about a week ago." Murumets will officially begin her new position on March 3. In the meantime, she plans to spend a week playing and taking tennis lessons in Arizona. She comes armed with a load of university degrees -- a BA from Bishops, a masters in social work from Wilfrid Laurier and an MBA from Western. She recently resigned from the board of governors at Bishops. She was also president of a telecommunications company before joining ParticipAction. "I wanted to change the world," she said of her social work studies, adding that she returned from private business to not-for-profit organizations because "I believe we can change the world.
